Jay's Deep Blue 80G Rimless SPS Dream

Hey All! I was planning to put up a 60G Deep Blue frag tank, so I had a stand built for it. I was planning to utilize as much space underneath so I didn't want to make it out of wood. A friend of mine works with metal, so he made me a great steel stand.

I would have loved to get it powder coated, but time and funds didn't allow for it so we hit it with a few coats of Rust-Oleum High Performance Enamel spray in "Safety Blue".

I was set to grab the 60G from a friend when a 80G rimless popped up for sale. I really wanted the Gyre 150 listed, but when I asked for both, the seller gave me a great deal that I couldn't pass up.

Fast forward a couple weeks, to Saturday, when I placed the tank in its final position, leveled it out and stated the fill around 11PM.

Then I started to mess with the possible scapes, with the help of some of the staff here ( @Herbie, @scotty ). We went back and forth on a couple things and came up with a few different options:

@Herbie asked me to rotate the 2nd piece from the left 180 degrees, and I definitely liked it better.

@scotty likes the way the right piece has a bonsai feel to it, but it's just too tall to keep this way:

Close to what I think the final product will be, but I have to say it's still tentative based on how flow works when it's completely full:

What it looked like yesterday morning at 8AM. We lost power for about an hour, so that's an hour the booster pump didn't run.

Around noon:

Getting salty!

It's always classy to have a DT skimmer :p

I put what sand I had in the house, so it made it a bit cloudy, but it should be clear when I get home tonight. Another bag of reefflakes is in the works, but in the meantime, I'll finish the lights and the sump.

I'll detail equipment shortly. Enjoy and thanks for looking :becky:

Equipment List:

Tank: Deep Blue 80 Gallon Rimless, with stock corner overflow removed
Overflow: 16" Synergy Reef Overflow with Bean Animal drains
Skimmer: Mad props to fwadiver for the hookup on a great Vertex Omega 150
Sump: 20 Gallon High, courtesy of goat585
Return pump: Eheim 1262
Biological media: I plan to have a few liters of Siporax and a handful of MarinePure Ceramic media balls. Not sure if I can squeeze any K1 in this system, but I might use a HOB fuge I have to do K1 instead of the chaeto I was planning on.

I think this will be the final scape. I know it's a little high, but I definitely didn't want a straight line all the way across. I'm definitely digging it:

That definitely was a sweet sump, but I think it cost more than the tank, lol...Thanks for the sub! I'm planning on putting the baffles in the sump tomorrow and soldering up the LED bars for the retro. I'll squeeze some turkey somewhere in there.

Toss them in and get it done
That's the plan. I still have to figure out the hanging kit, but that should be an easy mod. I won't run the bulbs for the next 2 weeks, but I'm going to try to coralline the tank up with a "coralline smoothie" and low blue leds for the 2 weeks 24/7. I read a few places that the 24/7 light would help speed the growth, and the smoothie is basically shavings + calcium + mag = awesome? so we'll see. I'm debating how long to wait to add a Moorish, lol...

I have a liter of siporax in the tank that's been seeded for at least 4 months from the 120G. I have some MarinePure ceramic biomedia that I can bring over too. As soon as the sump is done, I can take some K1 out of the 120's sump and basically have a full seeded tank. I even put some live sand already, and the wifey is grabbing another bag of reefflakes from a guy downtown. The only thing I can't finish yet is the plumbing in the DT. I think the original owner had it WAY too low and the backflow would be a good 5+ gallons into the sump. I'm only using a 20G sump, so I want to lessen that chance, even though I'm putting a check valve on the return line.

Lookin good bro! You'll have plenty of flow in the tank since it's so shallow, with the gyre.

Thanks Nino!! Can't wait to get things into this tank, but I don't mind waiting. I'm a huge fan of the gyre so I'm glad to be running it on both tanks.

Small update: it was a productive Thanksgiving. I knocked out the sump and lights today. Finally finished the lights around 12:30AM. It's really difficult to not get hurt while soldering when you have a curious 5yr old and a crazy almost 3yr old, but I managed to get it done. Tomorrow, I'll leak test the sump baffles, which I'm sure are fine and I should be getting the final plumbing pieces tomorrow as well. It's plumbed for hose, so should I go spaflex or the braided stuff?

"You wanna pick me up? You wanna pick me up? You wanna pick me up?"

Props to Bryan in the City for hooking me up with a bag of reefflakes. HUGE props to the wifey for transporting for me, haha

Progress!! Finally finished the initial plumbing last night. Not too thrilled with the vinyl hose I'm using, but I'll figure it out. For now, I'm just letting water run through the sump and through the system.

I'm in love with the final scape. I'm not planning to have too much on the sand, but I might do a few isolated sps islands.

At the moment, I've got a tester milli piece and a rock nem to entice the pom pom crab to chill around.

The current inhabitants (no pic of the pom pom crab atm):
